TRENDS IN

FASHION HISTORY

Course Description: Students will gain awareness of past, current, and future trend forecasting, and their effect on the fashion industry. This course will provide an exploration of fashion trends and how they evolved and changed over the decades thus influencing and impacting our fashion lifestyle.

During this course, we switched between learning about fashion of the past and learning about trend forecasting, and how to do so ourselves. With my interest in costume design, finding out more about clothing and trends of the past was incredibly beneficial. Not only did we learn about simple trends, colors, and silhouettes that were featured throughout history, but we also studied why certain things were worn, and how trends were created without tools like the news and social media. We researched different textile creation methods and ways of dyeing clothing, as well as how geographical, political, and religious influences all played a part in what people wore in the past. We then took that knowledge and learned to apply it to our current industry so that we may not only look at trending color palettes, patterns, and silhouettes, but so that we may have a deeper understanding of how the world influences fashion.

Below is work from one of my projects for the class, where we were assigned to study 4 different subcultures and create an informative presentation. I took the assignment a step further, and sketches my own designs to feature throughout the presentation that I felt captured the elements and aesthetic of each subculture.
