Digital Senior Studio:

The B-Side

Course Description: Students will use a range of industry-specific technology solutions to develop portfolio ready fashion collections and create engaging visual presentations. The development process will include digitally simulated fabrics, original 2D and 3D pattern development, technical packages and garment visualization. Students will master digital tools to design, develop and present innovative concepts.

My first fully fledged collection, The B-Side was inspired by the evolution of jazz from the 1960’s-now, theatre, dance from the 60s-80s (particularly jazz and fosse), and all things 70s. For this collection, I combined dancewear and cocktail wear to create garments that allow for movement and accentuate the lines of the body. It tells a story through color, movement, and silhouette. It’s made for the modern artist who wants to stand out in a bold, yet classic, way. It was the perfect way for me to find the balance between functionality and fashion.

While drafting this collection, I wanted to make sure I was keeping the wearer in mind. The program we use, Browzwear: VStitcher, allows the user to test different materials on a 3D avatar, as well as check that each garment fits well on a human body, and isn’t too loose or tight. Throughout my process, I regularly communicated with friends who dance to ask questions and find out what they do and don’t like about modern dancewear, and style and fit were the two biggest concerns. Subsequently, fabric selection and comfort were at the top of my list of priorities alongside producing an aesthetically pleasing collection.

Eventually, “The B-Side” stuck and became my own little personal branding label.
