company
For Missouri State University’s production of Company, I collaborated closely with a co-designer, costume mentor, director, creative team, and actors to develop a cohesive costume vision for the production. A key part of my role was interpreting the director’s vision and translating it into costumes that supported the characters, relationships, and overall visual language of the show. Through design meetings, time-period research, and collaboration with the creative team, I learned how to balance my own design ideas with the needs and direction of the production as a whole.
I was actively involved throughout the fitting and construction process, working directly with the drapers to bring my designs from concept to finished costumes. Being present at fittings allowed me to evaluate garments on the actors, make adjustments, and communicate changes to ensure that each piece supported both the character and the overall design. Collaborating with the costume shop also gave me a greater understanding of how design decisions translate into practical construction and how to adapt ideas while maintaining the original intent.
This production strengthened my ability to communicate and collaborate within a creative team while developing my skills in costume design and production. Working closely with actors and other members of the team taught me how costume choices can evolve throughout the process, and how flexibility, communication, and problem-solving are essential to creating a cohesive final product.
